BJ’s Market & Bakery, was our second restaurant theme opened in 1997. We proudly celebrate 32 years total in 2024. BJ’s Market has been acclaimed by several food critics and was previously named one of the “Top Ten Restaurants" in Chicago. Since opening, BJ’s Market has increased its services to include private labeling, catering and delivery. 

The Southern cuisine is the culinary melting pot of America, melding African, Appalachian, and Cajun flavor. Our Chef driven menu in its simplicity is a promise of straightforward enjoyment, of memories made over plates of food shared amongst family and friends who love one another. Most importantly it pays tribute to his heritage and the “love filled” cooking of his Mother and Grandmother. 

John Meyer, Chef/Owner of BJ’s Market & Bakery, graduated from Chicago State University in 1987 with a Bachelor’s in Marketing. He enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at Washburne Trade School in Chicago where he was classically trained in French-American cuisine. While in chef’s school, John volunteered his time and resources to a senior care facility called The Retreat. He purchased food and supplies and prepared meals for the facility’s residents and families. After graduation, he worked at the prestigious University Club of Chicago to hone his culinary skills. After gaining invaluable experience at the Club, Chef Meyer committed himself to opening a "white tablecloth" restaurant on Chicago’s South Side. Established in 1992, "The Retreat Restaurant" was housed in a renovated Victorian mansion in the historical Pullman area. It's vast popularity was attributed to delicious fare (ranging from classical French to traditional American cuisine), fine service and elegant atmosphere. John led "The Retreat Restaurant" until 1999 when it was sold to another restaurant group. 

He continued his quest to provide quality food service establishments to his community, 

John’s second venture combined an upscale atmosphere, comfort food, and great customer service. The result was BJ’s Market & Bakery. 

BJ’s Market has been acclaimed by several food critics as well it's enjoyed positive adoration from customers. BJ’s Market has enhanced its services to include catering and delivery. You may also visit BJ's at O'hare Airport in terminal 3.

John served for one year as Chairman of the Illinois Restaurant Association starting in 2008. He had the honor as the first African American to do so.

In the last 7 years John helped form a new food business'.

It's called “blueprint foods” . Our customers includes among others, Mariano’s, Jewel and Whole Foods. The plan is to continue to grow as the market demands.
